The Importance of Renewable Energy

The continuous growth of the world population and economy, coupled with rapid urbanisation has resulted in a monumental increase in energy demand. The classic trend of energy supply depends on fossil fuel energy resources which, are depleted and limited by geographical distribution and ease of extraction. The ways by which we have utilised fossil fuels as our principal source of energy since the industrial revolution have caused a massive increase in the levels of CO2 and other Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in our atmosphere which is the main cause of global warming. Thus, decarbonisation of the energy supply by utilising alternative clean, sustainable and renewable energy is essential for future energy sustainability and global security. Renewable Energy resources will play a key role in the transition towards a clean and sustainable energy system.

Solar Energy

Solar energy offers a clean, cost-effective and renewable source of energy.

Solar power production involves converting sunlight into electricity through the use of solar panels made up of photovoltaic cells. The sunlight causes a flow of electrons, generating an electric current that is converted from DC to AC electricity and sent to a transformer to increase its voltage. The electricity is then distributed to the power grid for use by consumers. Technologies such as tracking systems, anti-reflective coatings and improved cooling systems. are used to optimize the performance of the PV cells and ensure maximum efficiency.

Wind Energy

Wind power production is the process of generating electricity from the kinetic energy of wind. This process involves the use of wind turbines, which are tall structures that have blades attached to a rotor. The rotor spins when the wind blows, and this motion generates mechanical energy.

This mechanical energy is then converted into electrical energy through the use of a generator. The generator converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy, which can be used to power homes, businesses, and other devices. The electricity is collected and sent to a transformer, which increases the voltage of the electricity so that it can be transmitted more efficiently over long distances.
